Cucumber is an annual plant of warm seasons. It is a climbing plant that is used as summer vegetable throughout in India. The cucumber fruit is eaten raw or is served as a salad or cooked as a vegetable. The seeds of cucumber are used for oil extraction which has health benefits.

Timely picking of cucumber is important for best quality fruit. Dig in plenty of well rotted organic matter such as compost before planting. Use supports such as trellis if you're growing cucumbers upwards. Set plants at about 45cm apart. Cucumbers should be harvested while they are still small and tender.

Soil

Sandy loam soil that is rich in organic matter, with good drainage, and a pH range from 6.5-7.5 are ideal for cucumber cultivation. Make sure the soil contains organic matter by adding organic compost or any farm yard manure for higher yield.

Climate

This crop requires a moderate warm temperature, ideally between 20 and 26 C. Excess humidity promotes diseases like powdery mildew and downy mildew. Frost conditions are not suitable.
